Fish curry, is a delicious and flavored Indian dish. In India, the process of making fish curry is different in every region of India. Not only process it's taste is also different. Today we know about most famous and delicious Konkani style fish curry. It consists of sardines semi-stewed curry with assorted vegetables, such as onions. It is usually served with rice or roti in India. Fish curry is a most important dish in the Konkani cuisine. The main ingredient for making this fish curry is a paste of grated coconut dry red chilies and kokum or tamarind (konkani people mostly use kokum while making fish related dishes, but if you can't find kokum then you can use tamarind).
This dish is normally make with Pomfret or Kingfish, which are easily available in fish markets of India. In Konkani style fish curry, the fish is cooked in a spicy coconut base and flavored it using onions, ginger and coconut oil.
Ingredients for making fish curry:
8 to 10 small, firm white fish pieces (like Kingfish or Pomfret)
Finely chopped one small onion
2 - 3 sliced or chopped green chilies (use on your spice level)
1 tsp well chopped ginger
1 tsp of coconut oil
2 to 3 dried sol or kokum (you can also use tamarind, if you don't have kokum)
salt to taste
To Grind
Use ½ cup grated coconut
4 to 6 dry red chilies ( use as per your spice level)
a small piece of tamarind / kokum
warm water
Instructions for making Indian fish curry (konkani style)
First you have to Wash the fish well in water.
Make paste of those items, which listed under "To Grind" with your blender. Add some water at a time to blending everything to make a smooth paste. It should not be too watery, so don’t add too much of water.
Now take a small pan, add 1tsp coconut oil and when it's hot add the ground coconut paste, chopped onions, ginger, green chilies and salt in it.
Bring this all to a boil over a medium heat. Don't use high heat to boil fast.
Add 2 cups water, bring it to a boil and add 2 pieces of dried sol or kokum for great taste. Kokum is most important in Konkani style cuisines.
Finally when this comes to a boil, lower the flame and drop the fish pieces in it carefully.
Now, you have to cook until the fish turns white. Turn the fish pieces carefully after they turn white. This should take some time about 5 - 6 minutes.
Now turn off the heat and Serve hot with plain rice or roti.
