Konkan Railway runs from Roha in Maharashtra till Thokur in Karnataka for a total distance of 741 km (460 mi), along the west coast of India and Western Ghats. The Konkan Railway is also an example of the high spirits of the engineers of this country.
It is known as an engineering marvel across the world. Built across some of the toughest terrains, Konkan Railways has over 2,000 bridges and 91 tunnels. The difficult weather conditions of the Konkan region resulted in problems continuing to the railway line even after its inauguration. The project was considered the biggest and perhaps most difficult railway undertaking during this century, at least in this part of the world. The completion of the Konkan Railway was a “tryst with destiny” for many people in the Konkan region.
The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd, is one of the few privately run railway lines for use of public transportation. In the Konkan region there are plenty of coconut fields and mango orchards and preserving the ecosystem was a big engineering challenge and also environmental challenge. In order to preserve the landscape, the line made use of tunnels so that they would not have to destroy agricultural land. Konkan Railway offers stunning, undulating and breath-taking scenic beauty to travelers all along the way. The natural beauty of region complemented with elegant man made structures will make the journey over Konkan Railway into memorable experience for the passengers. Konkan belt has great attraction for tourists and those who have an appreciative mind to enjoy scenic beauty.
Konkan Railway's headquarters at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai and E. Sreedharan, a senior railway official, as its first Chairman and Managing Director, though the work to build the railway line had started much earlier.
