Malvan fort - Fort in the ocean


Malvan fort also called as sindhudurg fort  is located at malvan in sindhudurg district of Maharashtra state. It is stunning and strong fort which was built by Shivaji Maharaj and One of the enduring symbols of Maharashtra's rich historical past. The fort derives its name from the combination of two words, Sindhu meaning sea and Durg meaning fort. Sindhudurg is just 510 km from Mumbai on the Goa Highway. One can take a ferry from the Malvan Port to the island fort.
     The malvan fort was Built between 1664-67 by Shivaji maharaj. the Sindhudurg fort has it foundation laid on molten lead. One of the best preserved sea forts Sindhudurg fort has a four kms long rampart with 42 bastions. The fort is approachable from the Malvan pier by boat.
       The Sindhudurg or malvan fort built on the Kurte Island on over 44 acres of land in Malvan also a S.C.U.B.A. diving and snorkeling site is the primary attraction in Malvan apart from the beaches. The stone inscriptions, bastions and the citadels of this fort would definitely transport you to a different land and time altogether. descendants of Shivaji's era still inhabit this fort and carry forward the traditions of yore to this day.
      The entrance of the fort is at the northeast corner with 45 staircases leading from the inside to the top of the wall. The fort consists of 52 Buruzs and 3 sweet water wells. There are 3 temples within the fort premises dedicated to Bhavanimata, Mahadev and Shivaji Maharaj. There is a temple of Maruti near the gate and few small temples of Bhavani, Mahadeo, Jarimai and Shivaji which was built by Rajaram. This fort has an underground tunnel which connects another fort called Padmagad.
      Apart from the fort itself, the famous two branch coconut tree is not to be missed! But The tree was struck by lightning a couple of years ago.
     Malvan is a great place for food lovers. It is famous for Malvani Khaja, Malvani Hapus (Alphonso Mango) and fish curry. It is also famous for Chinese clay. Malvan is a beautiful place with clean beaches, ancient temples, testy food and stunning monuments. The backwaters in Malvan is an ideal site for water sports and also the rare places where one can enjoy S.C.U.B.A Diving and snorkeling in Maharashtra.  Located in the Sindhudurg districts it is the Southern-most tip of Maharashtra and about 514 km from Mumbai.
