The network of Mumbai Suburban Railways is Popularly known as "locals" in Mumbai. It spread across a distance of 427.5 kilometers (265.6 mi). It carries more than 7.5 million commuters daily and it is the oldest railway network in Asia. Its operations started in 1953. The trains services run almost every 4 to 5 minutes both up/down the route in normal morning/evening hours. The Mumbai Suburban Railway is the busiest rapid transit system in the world. (Trains run from 4 AM until 1 AM, and some trains also run up to 2:30 AM.)
      The Mumbai's Suburban Railway is operated by Indian Railways' with two zonal divisions Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR). Western Railway (WR) operates the Western Line, and Central Railway (CR) operates the Central Line, Harbour Line, Trans-Harbour Line as well as the Vasai Road-Diva-Panvel line.

Ladies Special trains with the entire reserved for women passengers started since 1992.
Semi ladies special is a train with a few coaches reserved for women. These designations can be combined with fast & slow.
