Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is one of India's most unique and historical landmarks in the city of Mumbai, Financial Capital of India. This Indo-Saracenic style structure was constructed in 1924. The main objective behind the construction of the Gateway of India was built to welcome King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. Also the Gateway of India is a major tourist hub in the city, which is located at Apollo Bunder in Southern Mumbai.

      The architectural design of Gateway of India was designed by architect, George Wittet. It built with yellow basalt and It took 4 years to complete this construction. The construction cost was a sum of Rs. 21 lakh, paid by the Government of India. After some year, the statues of Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji were installed at the Gateway. backside of Gateway of India lead to the waterfront where you can board the bots to Elephanta caves.

       Gateway of India is stand in front of Indian Ocean with his back support of entire Mumbai city. In right hand you can see On of the Great Taj Hotel and Naval base with left.

      A statue of one of the greatest Maratha worrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj  was inaugurated on 26 Jan 1961, at the opposite side of the gateway as a symbol of Maratha pride. There are other statue of Swami Vivekananda is also present in this area  to celebrate his journey from Mumbai to Chicago for the Parliament of World Religions.
     
      A desired tourist and historic spot, the Gateway of India was the target of dual bombing attacks with the most crowded Zaveri Bazar area on 25 August, 2003. In this incident 54 killed and 244 people injured.

      The Gateway of India was also suffer from the 26 November, 2008 terrorist attacks operated by 10 terrorist of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamic organization based in Pakistan. The terrorist detrain from boats in 2 groups near the Gateway of India and begins to carry out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks in south Mumbai, killing more than one hundred fifty Indian and foreign people's.

       In the present period, the Gateway of India is a crowded and most visited place in Mumbai. People, especially from Mumbai , use this place as a hang out. The Gateway of India is a favourite spot for local people and a satisfactory location for photographers, tourists and also for event organizers, many kinds of event orgnized at gateway of India. In the month of February-March during Elephanta festival there are many classical dancers and musicians perform right here.

Many Boats and ferries are depart from the gateway’s wharves for Elephanta Island.

Nearby Tourist Attractions
Elephanta Caves are very close to the gateway of india. Tourists can travel on motor boats to reach the Elephant Islands. Also The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is India's most luxurious hotel and is also situated close to the Gateway of India.

Visiting Hours
People can visit this place at any time of the day. The best time to visit the Gateway of India is during the period of November to March, because the post-monsoon climate is very pleasant and there are very less chances for downpours.

The Gateway of India is located something around 2.5 km from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal and 2.4 km from Churchgate railway station.
